This is a prototype for a game or game mechanic made for the jam Games for Blind Gamers 5.

The browser version is only to give you a preview but does sound stereo and graphics wrong. Please play a downloaded version.

Here you are an insect flying through the forest avoiding birds, frogs, and waterfalls. Birds can get you from above, frogs from the ground, waterfalls to either side. Birds and frogs have multiple sounds that you need to learn to distinguish from other environmental sounds like crickets, squirrels, etc.  Avoid them by flying away from them. Go down to avoid birds from above and go up to avoid frogs from below.  Waterfalls can be at either side and require that you distinguish what side the are so you can avoid them going to the opposite side.

If you don't avoid a hazard, you won't die and the game won't end. You just take emergency evasive action by instinct and dodge the hazard at the very last second. This makes you lose speed but you just continue accelerating forward through the forest.

Hitting the obstacles not only loses you speed for a moment. The game is constantly evaluating your ability to avoid the hazards and will adjust the difficulty accordingly. It does this by changing the maximum speed you can reach, how quickly you accelerate to it, the space between the hazards, etc. Ideally, it keeps the game engaging but not frustrating. You should be hitting some hazards but not that many.

Instructions

You are continuously flying forward at an increasing speed you don't control

Use the WASD, arrow keys, or joystick to move.

Go down to avoid birds

Go up to avoid frogs

Go left or right to avoid waterfalls depending on what side you hear them.

If you don't avoid an obstacle, you'll hear some angry fluttering of wings and you will lose speed.
